Steve Haskey

Drum Monkey Percussion - Steve Haskey
Steve has been playing the drums for 38 years. Steve started playing the drum set in middle school and in 8th grade played his first concert on the drum set. That’s when he really fell in love with playing drums. Steve played and practiced as much as he could, and luckily his parents didn’t mind him practicing!

In high school Steve was in marching band, concert band, jazz band, and the orchestra for all the school musicals. He played numerous solos and ensembles for district music contests in his 4 years at Lafayette High School. Steve wrote several pieces of music for drum line that were performed at pep rallies and halftime shows. He was the first freshman in Lafayette’s history to become percussion section leader. Steve received multiple letters and awards including Outstanding Freshman and Outstanding Jazz Musician. He taught a beginning band class and was a mentor to middle school drummers at Robidoux Middle School and to the incoming freshman drummers.

After high school Steve continued to practice and to play with friends and at jam sessions. In 1992 Steve started playing in the orchestra at Wyatt Park Baptist and continued to play with them until 1995. In 1995 Steve started to and continues to play drums & percussion during their contemporary worship service. Steve have been a guest drummer and played at several other churches during Sunday morning worship and at revivals.

In 2002 Steve started playing drums with the Buchanan Highlanders, a bagpipe and drum corp. They played at numerous business functions, funerals, patriotic services, and police and fire memorials. On St. Patrick’s Day they did their annual pub crawl and played at several local pubs to raise money to fund the organization. Steve continued playing with them until 2008.

In 2006 Steve co-founded Drum Monkey Percussion with Kyle Milligan and since that time has assisted beginning drum classes and helped organize and perform in our class recital at Wyatt Park Baptist Church. In 2010 Steve and Kyle opened Drum Monkey Percussion’s lesson, studio, and retail store in downtown St. Joseph. Steve continues to practice, learn, and grow as he strives to meet Drum Monkey Percussion’s goals of promoting music and music education in our community.

Kyle Milligan

Drum Monkey Percussion - Kyle Milligan

Kyle is a dynamic educator both of percussion studies and life skills. Backed by his passion for music education, he quickly adapts to his students needs and can alternate between a variety of teaching styles to help them understand and accomplish goals. A composer, arranger, and performing artist, he has developed a series of lessons that will progress his students from beginner to college entry levels. Many former students have received high honors at district and state levels and others have gone on to become teachers themselves.

Kyle’s love of education started at an early age. He began taking lessons when he was nine and by the time he reached high school he realized his potential for teaching and started instructing fellow classmates. This developed his love for music and along with his drive, garnered him a Bachelor of Education degree from Missouri Western State University. While at Western, Kyle was a member of the music fraternity Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Nu Gamma. He was a featured xylophone and marimba soloist throughout his time at Western, which eventually landed him a coveted two year teaching assistantship at Wichita State University where he received a Master of Music in Percussion Performance. This experience afforded several opportunities to study with some exceptional mallet players, including Dave Samuels, Gordon Stout, and David Freedman. He has been teaching since 1988.

Kyle is currently performing weekly with the Wyatt Park Praise Team. He has been a televised marimba soloist, a guest artist at area schools, and performed with many percussion ensembles, symphony orchestras, steel drum bands. He has also been a member of Under the Influence and The Extra Mile Band.

Jonathan

Jonathan is currently a student intern here at Drum Monkey Percussion and a full-time student at Missouri Western State University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Instrumental Music Education with an emphasis in percussion performance.  He began playing percussion when he was 5 years old. He comes from a family of Drummers.  He has been involved in many instrumental ensembles since he was in the 6th grade.  Throughout high school, he took multiple solos and ensembles to contest with many of them going on to state festival.  In 2009 he came to Missouri Western and  has really developed a passion not just to play percussion, but to teach and share his talents with others.   His college experience has exposed him to many different types of percussion and teaching techniques which has resulted in him being more of a well-rounded “percussionist.”  His teaching and professional experience includes giving private lessons for two years as well as an active member of CMENC (Collegiate Music Educators National Conference), active member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia fraternity and a member of PAS (Percussive Arts Society) for two years.  He was also the drum line coordinator for Oak Park High School in North Kansas City for two years.

I have performed live and or recorded with the following acts…Suspicious Minds (Elvis tribute band), Dripline (original rock band), Dead Birds and Blind Kids (original punk rock band), Working Class Joe (cover band-blues,country,classic rock etc.), One Night Stand (cover band-80’s rock, party music etc.), Demon Bell (original hard rock band), Thirteen Miles (original heavy metal band) and of course Hemlock! Performing countless shows, nationally and internationally, and recording several albums.
I am very excited for my newest venture in music…I am offering private one on one lessons at Drum Monkey Percussion in St. Joseph, Missouri.
